Picking a gerbil- what age to choose
What age of gerbil to get depends on a few things, but in most cases, younger is better. Why? Because younger gerbils are easier to tame, and still have their entire lives ahead of them.
A factor to keep in mind, however, is whether or not you are going to introduce the gerbil to another. If you are going to introduce the new gerbil to an adult gerbil, you should aim for a younger gerbil, but an adult is okay to. If introducing it to a pup, once again, a younger gerbil is best, but an adult will work. If you are introducing it to an older gerbil, an adult may work, but a pup will definitely be better.
Also, if you are going to be breeding the gerbil, then age is important. There will be more on that when I get around to a page on breeding.
So in general, unless you are specifically wanting a gerbil that will perhaps not live too much longer, younger is better. Not too young though! If you can at all help it, don't get a gerbil that is under five weeks.
