Nibbling
Gerbil behavior- Nibbling
Nibbling, unlike nipping and biting, is not really a problem. It is not derived from stress, nor bad temperament. It is usually for two reasons. 1, gerbils taste one another's saliva in order to recognize each other. They may be trying to taste you to figure out who you are. 2, you just ate something yummy and they want a bite too!
If they are doing it for the first reason, no worries. They'll probably stop on their own after a few weeks. And since nibbling doesn't generally hurt, this shouldn't be a problem. If it does bother you, you can gently nudge them away. As for the second reason, there is no need to discourage this. Instead, just wash your hands! For information on nipping, click here.
